Chapter 19: The Hearing Room
The hearing was in the boardroom of Kell Harbor Lines, on the fourth floor of a brick building above the Providence docks.
Eleven board members sat along a long oak table with water glasses in front of them.
The trustee sat at the far end, and the family filled four rows of folding chairs.
Clive sat in the front row with a new lawyer, a thin man in a pinstriped suit who smelled of cologne.
Cressida sat in the last row by the door, alone.
Caspar wore a charcoal jacket over his black sweater, and I had straightened the collar myself at the elevator.
His hands shook in his lap.
I put mine over them, and he let me.
"We are here on a petition," the trustee said. "That Caspar Kell is unfit to hold what his grandfather left him. Mr. Kell's counsel may proceed."
The pinstriped lawyer rose.
"Members of the board. This is a simple matter."
He held up a sheet of paper.
