Chapter 21: The Ship
Caspar read the message over my shoulder, and I felt him go still.
"Six months," he said.
"At sea."
"The Atlantic transect. Your advisor mentioned it in October. You said it was the cruise you'd give a kidney for."
"I said that when I had a kidney's worth of debt."
He was quiet for a long moment.
Then he said, "Go."
I rolled over to look at him.
"That's it?"
"That's it."
"You didn't even think about it."
"I thought about it the whole time you were reading." His voice was steady.
"It's the biggest thing you've ever been offered. I won't be the reason you turn it down."
"You don't want me to stay?"
"I want you to stay so badly I can't see straight."
He sat up and pushed his hair back with an inky hand.
"That's why I'm saying go."
I should have been grateful.
Instead I was furious, in a way I couldn't have explained to Lucy or myself.
"You could at least fight for it," I said.
