Chapter 28: Never
The doctor looked at the tablet in his hand.
Then at Virginia.
Then back at the officer.
"No," he said.
Nobody at the nurses' station moved.
"She's not pregnant," the doctor said. "The blood test came back ten minutes ago. Negative."
"She lost it," Virginia said at once. "Tonight. On that sidewalk. That's what I've been telling this officer."
The doctor shook his head.
"Ma'am, there's no sign of a loss. Not tonight. Not recently. There's no sign she's been pregnant at any point I can see."
Behind the curtain, something fell off a tray and hit the floor.
A nurse came out of the bay a second later.
She was holding a clear plastic bag at arm's length.
Inside it was a smooth, rounded shape the color of skin, with two elastic straps hanging off the back.
"She asked to use the restroom before the exam," the nurse said. "This was in the bin. Under the paper towels."
The young officer stared at the bag.
He let go of his cuffs.
The officer from Front Street took the bag from the nurse and held it up at eye level.
She looked at it for a long time.
Then she said it loud enough for the whole row of curtains to hear.
"Mrs. Thornton is not pregnant. She has not lost a baby. There is no baby."
She turned to the young officer.
"The only thing that fell on Pike Street tonight was her."
"That's a medical record," Virginia said. "You have no right to announce it in a corridor."
"Your daughter-in-law made a police report, ma'am. In a corridor. With a crowd." The officer lowered the bag. "I'm going to need to know if she stands by it."
She pulled the curtain aside.
Blair was sitting on the edge of the bed in a paper gown.
Flat.
Her camel coat was on the chair. The pink dress hung loose on a hook.
