Chapter 30: The Toast
"They want you in a courtroom twelve hours after that woman calls you violent on television," the lawyer said. "With no sleep. Looking exactly the way she described you."
"Can we stop it?"
"No. But we can walk in with something." She paused. "Is it still in your pocket?"
I put my hand on the drive.
"Yes."
"Then go to your party."
The Harbor Club sat at the end of the Wharf with every window lit.
Cars lined up in the snow to the corner. Men in black coats. Women holding their hems off the wet steps.
At the door a man with a clipboard found our names under V, for Pendry.
The ballroom was gold and white. Forty round tables. A long head table on a low stage, under a banner with the Thornton anchor.
Harbor pilots. The port authority. The men who owned the cranes my engine moved.
At table four sat the woman in the black suit from Saint Jude's. She saw me and gave one short nod.
The reporter was by the pillars with a press badge on a lanyard.
My professor was at a back table, in a borrowed dinner jacket that was too big in the shoulders.
The sergeant from Front Street was at table twelve, out of uniform.
Nathan pulled out my chair.
My mother sat beside me with her handbag on her knees and both hands on the clasp.
At eight-thirty the music stopped.
The doors at the side of the stage opened.
Virginia came in first, on her cane, in silver.
Mitchell came behind her.
He was in black tie, and he looked like he hadn't slept since the kitchen floor.
Then Blair.
She was in a long white gown with an empire waist.
Under it was the biggest bump I had ever seen on a woman standing up.
The room broke into applause.
A woman at the next table put her hand on her heart.
