Chapter 17: Hickory Street

Martha's POV

I watched her from the nursery window for a full minute before I went down.

Lena sat on my front step with her son in her lap, and Jonas stood on the walk three feet away with his hands in his pockets.

Neither of them was talking.

I had left a message for the lawyer at nine: do not file, I'll call you.

I had not decided what I'd say to this woman, and I put on my coat and went out anyway.

"Marty," Jonas said.

"I'll take it."

He looked at me, and at her, and nodded.

"I'll be inside with the baby," he said, and went in, and shut the door as quietly as you shut a door on a sleeping child.

Lena stood up.

Her eyes were swollen, and she had not brushed her hair.

She held the boy on her hip with both arms, as if I might take him.

"I'm so sorry," she said. "I'm sorry. I know that's."

"Not here," I said. "Come to the back."

We walked around the side of the house and across the grass to the fence.

The gate in the back fence had been painted shut since we moved in, and I had never once tried it.

I put my shoulder to it now, and it gave.
