Chapter 14: Sunday Dinner

I went back at seven in the morning, and Bram was on the porch with two mugs.

He gave me one without a word.

We sat on the boards and drank it, and nothing in me was undecided anymore.

"We go to dinner," I said. "Both of us, and we don't hide anything we don't have to."

"He'll have a plan."

"So do I. It's called eating Fern's ham slowly."

At one o'clock, Fern's dining room smelled of roast chicken and furniture polish.

She sat at the head of the table in her good cardigan, with her cane hooked on her chair.

Pauline sat at Lyle's right with her tablet face down, which I had never seen.

Lyle stood to carve.

He was in a soft blue sweater, relaxed, a man with nothing to hide in the world.

"Aunt Fern, I have a confession," he said, laying a slice on her plate. "Miss McCabe and I have met before. Sort of."

"You've met her five times," said Fern. "You're the one who hired her."

"Not like this."

He set down the knife and turned to me, and his face went gentle and sad.
