Chapter 17: Pauline at the Gate
The Neville Island gate was chained, and a sodium lamp turned the rain orange.
Bram parked across from it and shut off the engine.
"It could be him," he said. "Waiting."
"It could."
"You should stay in the truck."
"I should," I said. "I'm not going to."
He gave me a look, and I held up my palm, and he almost laughed.
We got out together.
Beyond the fence, the new warehouse hulked in the dark, and the old yard office was gone.
Only a square of broken concrete showed where it had been.
A silver sedan sat at the end of the road with its lights off.
Pauline got out of the driver's door in a black raincoat, with a large binder under her arm.
She was alone.
She looked at Bram, and at me, and at the dark behind us.
"Is that the detective?" she said.
"Not yet."
"Then I'll talk fast."
She came closer and set the binder on the hood of the truck.
"I took this out of Lyle's safe at eight tonight. I'll be in a lot of trouble if I'm wrong."
