I climbed the four flights at a run and did not knock.
Corbin was at the drafting table with his sleeves rolled, a pencil in his hand and nothing on the page.
His left hand lay flat beside the paper.
The pale band of skin where his father's ring had sat for ten years was bare.
"Where is it?" I said.
He didn't pretend to misunderstand.
"On my mother's desk."
"Why?"
"Because she asked what I'd pay to make her leave Linden alone, and I ran out of things she wanted."
I stood in the middle of the room with my coat still buttoned.
"Tell me all of it. Slowly."
He set the pencil down.
"I own thirty-eight percent of Hallworth and Company. My father left it to me, not to her."
"I know what you own."
