We went out through the loading dock because neither of us could face the lobby.
The alley behind the Armory was wet and cold, with a single lamp over the freight door.
Cheers still leaked through the brick behind us.
I stood in my gown with a stranger's jacket over my shoulders and read the papers under the light.
He had signed every page.
He had waived alimony, the apartment, the pension, and every claim on what I had earned or would earn.
The last page was a paragraph in his own handwriting.

"That's not how a divorce works," I said. "You don't get to give things up by being dramatic."
