Chapter 18: The Six-Week Appointment
The doctor said yes on Thursday at ten past three, and I said thank you twice.
June took Maggie at five.
She came to the garage in her truck with a diaper bag already packed and looked at my face once.
"Bottles are in the cooler," I said. "She eats at nine and at one."
"Annie. I raised one. I'll live." June buckled the car seat in and didn't look at Rafe, who was suddenly very interested in a socket set. "Go on, now. Both of you."
The truck pulled out, and the bay doors rolled down, and then it was only the two of us in the quiet.
Rafe stood with his back against the workbench and his hands flat on the steel.
"Annie."
"Don't."
"I'm only saying, it's your rule."
"I made a lot of rules."
"Rule three. No touching."
"Break it," I said.
He pushed off the bench and crossed the floor in three steps, and his mouth came down on mine.
It was nothing like the kiss in the garage.
This one had fifteen years in it, and neither of us was stopping.
He backed me up the apartment stairs with his hands under my jacket, and I got his shirt over his head on the landing.
His chest was warm and broad and scarred across the ribs from some accident I had not been there for.
I put my mouth on it.
He swore under his breath and picked me up.
In the bedroom, he laid me down on the quilt June had brought.
I pulled my sweater off, and then I froze with my hands on my own stomach.
It was soft, and silvered with stretch marks, and I hadn't let anyone see it in two months.
Rafe stood over me, breathing hard.
His eyes went down my body, slowly, and came back up.
