Chapter 27: Rafe's POV: The Lesson
Rafe's POV
The old quarry lot in Dell Creek is flat gravel the size of three football fields, and nobody uses it after five.
I brought the Triumph out there on the flatbed on the fourth evening, and Annie was already waiting by the gate in her father's jacket.
The oldest wife had Maggie again.
Annie had thanked her so many times that the woman told her to quit, or she'd start charging.
I set the ramp and rolled the bike down.
It was a green tank and chrome, fifty years old, and it ticked as it cooled.
Walt Gerrity had kept it perfect.
"Okay," Annie said. "Tell me."
"Clutch lever's on the left. Pull it in all the way."
She did.
"Now the foot shifter. Down once for first."
"Down once."
"Then let the clutch out slowly. Slower than you think."
She let it out, and the bike lurched and died.
"Slower."
She tried again, and it died again.
On the sixth try the Triumph rolled forward ten feet at a walk, and she shrieked, and I laughed out loud.
I hadn't laughed like that since Alaska.
I'd forgotten what her face looked like when she was scared and thrilled at once.
By the end of the hour she had gone around the lot twice at a crawl, with her boots down and her jaw set.
"Again," she said. "Faster."
"Annie, it's your fourth night."
"Boone says I won't finish. Again."
The sun went orange behind the quarry wall, and she went around a third time, and a fourth, and I stood in the middle of the gravel with my hands in my pockets.
That is where I put them.
I had made myself a rule.
She came around the far end too fast on the fifth lap.
