Chapter 34: The Passenger Seat
"Say that again," said Cade.
Bree's hands were knotted in her lap.
"I'm sorry," she said. "I'm so sorry, I didn't know, I didn't know it was him."
"Bree." I came around the end of the bar and crouched in front of her stool. "Take your time. Nobody's angry."
"Second Fridays," she said.
She looked at me and not at the room.
"You remember I told the deputy. Every second Friday Travis came to my place for the zippered bag. I told her he came to the door."
"Yes," I said.
"He did. But he never came alone. His truck was always at the curb with the engine running, and someone sat in the passenger seat. I could see it from my closet window, where I kept the bag."
The room had stopped breathing.
"A man," she said. "I never saw his face. He wore a ball cap, pulled low, and he kept the window down an inch. I only saw his hand."
"What about his hand?" Cade said.
His voice came out strange.
"He wore a ring on his thumb," said Bree. "A silver one. It tapped the glass."
Every head in the room turned to Rory.
He stood by the bar with his beer in one hand and the other hanging at his side.
The silver ring on his thumb shone in the lamplight.
He looked at it, and then he laughed.
It was a small, helpless laugh, the kind a man gives when something absurd is said about him in public.
"Half the men in this room wear a ring on their thumb," he said.
"Not that one," Bree said. "It was thick, and it had a scratch across the top. It tapped the glass when he was thinking. And there was a laugh. I heard it through the window the first time, in March. I thought it was the radio."
