Chapter 42: Four Strokes
The man in the grey coat stood in the doorway with his hands folded in front of him.
"Don't stop on my account," he said. "I understood there was a meeting."
Forty men turned and looked at him.
Several of them stood up, and the chairs scraped.
"This is a club matter," said the gray-bearded man. "You're not patched."
"No. But I'm owed." The man smiled gently. "And I was told this evening would settle it."
"Told by who?"
"By Mr. Donohue. The one in the vest." He nodded at Rory. "He said there would be a vote, and a paper, and everyone would sign. I took him at his word. I don't often do that."
Every head swung to Rory.
He had gone grey.
He looked at the man in the doorway.
I saw the moment he understood that he had told two sets of people two different stories about the same night.
Both of them were in the room.
"I said it might happen," he said. "I never said."
"You said Sunday."
"I was trying to get time."
"You got a week," said the man in the grey coat. "And the week is finished."
"Then say what you want from us," said Cade.
He came to my side and took my hand, in the open.
"Paper, or interest," said the man.
"You'll get neither."
"I'll get one of them."
"You'll get a sheriff's deputy," I said. "She's in the lot. She's been in the lot since six. She has Bree's statement, and eleven bank strips, and a phone recording of a man in Salem. She'd like to talk to you about a card game and a truck on the headland road."
The man's smile did not move.
Behind him, the white sedan's door opened and shut, and a tall woman with a long braid stepped through the doorway and stood beside him.
