Chapter 22: Not for Sale
Rafe's POV
I drove the prospect's truck back up the mountain with the windows down and the radio off.
I'd sold my bike, so I had nothing under me that fit.
It was two in the morning when I turned in at the mill gate.
The yard lights were burning.
The garage was a black frame against the stars, and the kitchen windows glowed yellow.
I sat in the truck with my splinted hand on the wheel.
Behind me, headlights swung across the gravel and the club came home.
Twenty bikes, in a line, and nobody revved an engine.
They parked in the yard and killed them one by one, and the quiet came down.
Otis got off his bike last.
He walked up to my window, favoring his knee, and rapped on the glass.
"Get out."
"Not tonight, Otis."
"Get out of the truck, Rafe."
I got out.
He hit me.
It was a short, flat punch with the whole weight of his shoulder behind it, and it caught me on the good side of the jaw.
I sat down in the gravel with my ears ringing.
Nobody said anything.
Mabel was standing on the back steps in her black dress and her orthopedic shoes, with her arms folded.
"That's for the walk," Otis said.
"I didn't--"
"You stood up in front of three hundred people and told them what you did. I never saw a man do a braver thing. Then she offers you a way to keep the roof, and you tell her you're a keepsake."
"It was her money."
"It was her apology," Otis said. "It was her father's company, and she was trying to hand it back. You're the only one in Tennessee who didn't see it."
