Chapter 12: She Doesn't Know I Know

Simone's POV

On Friday night, the ballroom was nearly empty.

The event manager let us in at eight and left us alone with the lights half up.

The chairs were stacked against the walls.

A man on a ladder was fitting a second camera rig beside the arch.

A black cable ran down the wall from it to the floor.

"Krista's crew," said the manager, nervously. "They said it was approved."

"It is," I said.

She looked relieved and went away.

Miles stood beside me with his hands in his pockets, and we looked at the arch together.

It was the same arch, with the same white roses, newly refreshed.

The last time I had stood under it, I had held a bouquet and listened to Trenton laugh.

"Are you all right?" Miles asked.

"I keep thinking he'll walk in and say he's sorry."

"Would you want that?"

"No." I turned it over. "I think I want him to say it so I can not hear it."

He nodded as if that made perfect sense.

My phone buzzed in my purse.

It was a number I knew by now.

The man from the dinner.

I'm sorry to text again. Are you alone?

I typed: With a friend.

Good. I need to send you something.

I found it on Trenton's laptop this afternoon when he left it open at the loft.

I don't know what to do with it. I think you should see it.

Three images came through, one after another.

They were screenshots of a private chat.

At the top, it said: Krista.

Under it, in grey, a date.

Wednesday, 11:42 p.m.

The first message was Trenton's.

She told me about the baby today, lol.
