Chapter 16: Ahead of the Officiant

Trenton came down the aisle with both hands out, smiling at every row.

"Surprise!" he called. "I'm here! Babe, I'm here!"

Krista's camera swung to him, and for one second her face was pure relief.

The quartet stopped playing.

A few of his friends on the right-hand side laughed, uncertainly, and then stopped.

"Okay, okay," Trenton said, walking. "I know, I know, I'm late. But I'm here. Cor, you look unbelievable."

He reached the front row and grinned at his mother.

She held up the ring in her open hand and said nothing.

He took a half step, and then he saw the man under the arch.

"Miles?"

He laughed, a short, bright laugh.

"Miles from the office. Why is Miles up there?"

"Because I asked him," I said.

"Right. A bit." He wagged a finger at me. "Okay. That's good. That's actually good, Cor. You got me."

He turned to the room with his arms out.

"She got me! Everyone, give it up for her."

Three people on his side clapped.

Nobody on my side moved.

"The ceremony has started, Trenton," I said. "Please take a seat."

"Cor."

"Your mother's saved you the aisle chair."

He looked at the chair, and at his mother, and at the ring in her palm.

The grin stayed on his face, but it had stopped reaching his eyes.

"Okay," he said. "I get it. I get it, I was a jerk, you've made your point. Can we do this part later?"

"No."

"In front of everybody?"

"That's where you did it," I said.
