Chapter 13: Thirty Days
Mal read the bank letter over my shoulder, standing in the hall with snow melting off his collar.
"Thirty days," he said quietly. "I can have it wired by breakfast."
"No."
"Edie."
"Not tonight, and not in front of Wendell's lawyer."
The lawyer was still watching us from the doorway, with the pleased face of a man paid by the hour.
I folded the letter in half and put it in my bra, where he could see me do it.
We drove home in the groundskeeper's truck without talking.
He slept on my sofa that night, with his boots by the door.
I stood in the bedroom doorway at one in the morning and watched him lie there with his eyes open.
"I said angry," he said to the ceiling. "I didn't say gone."
I went to bed alone, and it was the longest night of my life.
On Sunday morning I found him at the stove, scrambling eggs for two.
I put the letter on the table between the plates.
"Teach me," I said.
"Teach you what?"
