Chapter 10: Not to Be Admitted

I read the green ink three times.

*Not to be admitted. D.R.*

"You kept this," I said.

"Our lobby kept it." Nolan sat down across from me. "The guard who works days has a habit of saving every ledger in a closet. I asked him Sunday night. He cried when he found it."

"Why would he cry?"

"Because he remembers you." His voice was rough. "He said a pregnant girl came five times, and she never raised her voice, and the woman with the lanyard told him to call security if she came a sixth."

My hands went cold on the table.

"Daphne was your chief of staff."

"For six years. She screened every visitor and every letter. I trusted her with my calendar and my mail."

"And then your fiancee."

"Eight months after you came to the tower." He pressed the heels of his hands to his eyes. "I proposed to the woman who erased my son."

I stood up and walked to the window.

I had not cried in front of him yet, and I wasn't going to start now.

But my chest hurt, and my throat was tight, and the window glass showed me a woman I barely knew.

"She knew who I was," I said. "In the ballroom, she knew my face. She planned the whole bracelet thing."

"She heard on Thursday that I was coming to the gala without her. She saw a catering staff list with your name on it. She had security check the temp agency's roster." He took a breath. "My head of security pulled the call log. She phoned the agency on Tuesday and asked who was working the coat room."

"So she set me up."

"Yes."

"For what? To get me fired?"

"To get you gone before I ever looked at you." He turned the sleeve over in his hands. "She's been afraid of this for five years, Bridget. Every time a woman on the street had your hair, she went white."

I laughed, a sharp, wet sound.

"Poor thing."

"Don't."

"I'm not feeling sorry for her, Nolan. I'm doing arithmetic."

I turned from the window.

"She hid me from you. And my father took the money and let it all stand, because it paid for his truck."
