Chapter 17: Daddy

"No," Nolan said into the phone.

"Nolan," Merryman began.

"No to the charges, no to the apology, and no to the vote. Do what you like on Saturday."

He hung up and stood on the sidewalk with his chest going in and out.

Benji tugged my sleeve.

"Mama, are we going to the castle?"

"We're going home."

"Can the man in the black car carry my lunchbox?"

"I'll carry it," Nolan said, and took it, and held it like it was made of glass.

By dinner there were four men in dark coats outside our house.

Two stood at the gate, one sat in a car across the road, and the fourth had followed me from the school to the front door.

I watched them from the dining room window.

"Who hired the fourth?" I said.

"I did. Today."

"Without telling me."

"I told you I would keep him safe."

"You told me after."

Benji was pushing peas around his plate in a pattern.

"Can we do this later?" Nolan said.

"We can."

We did not.

Benji sat up straight in his chair, and put down his fork, and looked from one of us to the other.

"I have a question," he said.

"Go ahead, baby."
