The Billionaire Married a Homeless Girl novel · Chapter 4 of 24

Chapter 4: Terms

The day center had no family beds until Monday.

I called the other two shelters from the hallway pay phone, with Benji on the bench coloring a dinosaur green.

Both had a waiting list.

One had a cot in a room with eleven other women, and no children under six.

I hung up the third call and pressed my forehead against the cold wall.

It was one in the afternoon.

I had five hours.

"There's a lease," Nolan said behind me. "I can sign a one-year lease on an apartment today. My lawyer says the county will take an address."

"A lease for me."

"Yes."

"With your name on it."

"With my name, to start. Bridget, I can fix tonight in an hour."

"What about tomorrow?"

He didn't answer, and I turned around.

"Whoever called this in knew where we slept," I said. "They'll call again. They'll say a rich man is paying a homeless girl, and that she's unfit, and the county will have to look. Won't they?"

"Yes."

His face was tired and honest.

"A lease keeps him with you tonight," he said. "It won't stop the next call. A lawyer told me what will."

"What?"

"A husband. A married household. A father's name on the paper once the test comes back."

I laughed.

I laughed so hard that Benji looked up from his dinosaur.

"You want to marry me."

"I want you to have every protection the law has to give. Marriage is the strongest one."

"We met once. Five years ago."

"You have my son."

"You don't know that yet."

"I know it in my bones." He put a hand flat on his chest. "I looked in that coat room and I knew."
