Chapter 9: Rosalind's Kindness
"My poor girl," Rosalind sobbed, and she walked straight at me with both arms out.
The photographer's camera went off three times before she reached the pavement.
Stuart stepped between us.
"Don't touch her," he said.
Rosalind stopped, and she let her handkerchief fall to her chest.
"Stuart, please. I'm her mother in every way that matters."
"You are not."
"I've been out of my mind for three weeks," Rosalind told the street.
A line of customers had followed us out of the bakery and stood on the pavement with their rolls in paper bags.
The baker stood among them with her arms crossed.
"I raised this child from twenty," Rosalind said, to the camera. "She had a breakdown after the fall. She runs. She says terrible things about her own sister. All I want is to take her home and give her medicine."
"What medicine?" I asked.
She turned her wet eyes on me.
"Sweetheart, you know. The vitamins. The iron. They're the only thing keeping you steady."
"The little white ones."
"Yes, darling. The little white ones."
I took the folded napkin out of my pocket and held it up between two fingers, and I opened it in the light.
"Is this iron, Rosalind?"
She looked at the pill for one moment too long.
"I couldn't say. Pills all look alike."
"The label said, do not use during pregnancy," I said. "You kept my refills in your cabinet. I took those pills every morning for three years. You told me they were Stuart's idea."
Somebody in the line drew a breath.
The photographer lowered his lens an inch and raised it again.
