Chapter 14: Brunch

Oma's Sunday table seated twelve, and every chair was taken.

Four of her friends from the stone church sat along one side in good wool, with their purses on their laps.

They had known Matthias since he wore short pants, and they watched me.

"Hanna, sit by me," Oma said, and tapped the chair at her right hand with the duck-head cane.

Matthias took the chair beyond mine.

The housekeeper set down a platter of roast pork, red cabbage and potato dumplings.

The smell of the pork reached me, and my stomach rolled over once.

I put my fork down very carefully.

Under the tablecloth, a folded napkin was pressed into my hand.

Inside it was a dry cracker.

I looked at Oma.

She was cutting her pork with great attention and didn't look back.

"Eat it slowly," she whispered. "I carried Gerhard through the whole of a summer on those."

I ate the cracker, and the room stopped tilting.

One of the church ladies leaned over to the next and murmured, "She's expecting," and the next one said, "Well, obviously."
