Chapter 20: Ten Weeks
Oma's parlor had a tiled stove, a velvet sofa and a clock that ticked too loudly.
At two o'clock on the nineteenth of December, it held six people and a tray of the good china.
Oma sat in the wing chair with her cane across her knees.
Matthias and I sat on the sofa, and I kept my hand over his.
Her doctor, a quiet woman in her sixties, stood by the window with a sealed envelope.
Dieter sat in the chair opposite us, in a charcoal suit with a pink tie, and beside him a lawyer with a leather case.
He was smiling.
He had been smiling since he came in, and it made my skin crawl.
"Mutti, I'm touched by the occasion," he said. "The tea, the good china. One would think we were celebrating."
"One would," said Oma.
"We should begin," said the lawyer.
Oma nodded to her doctor.
She cracked the seal, took out a single sheet, and put on her glasses.
"This is a prenatal paternity analysis," she said. "It uses Mrs. Reinhardt's blood and a cheek swab from Mr. Matthias Reinhardt."
