Chapter 24: The Bargain
At four in the morning on the twentieth of June, I told my husband I was going to kill him.
"That's reasonable," said Matthias.
"I mean it. With a bedpan."
"They don't use bedpans anymore."
"Then with the ice chips."
He held the cup to my mouth with a hand that did not shake at all.
I'd been in the room for eleven hours.
The baby had started three weeks early, at two in the morning, in the middle of a dream about macaroni.
He had carried my bag to the car himself.
He had driven the speed limit the whole way, and I had called him a coward for it.
Now the windows were black and the monitor beeped steadily, and the nurse at my bedside had arms.
"You're doing beautifully, Mrs. Reinhardt," she said. "Two more good ones."
"I don't want a good one. I want it out."
"Then give me a very good one."
Matthias bent over the bed and put his forehead against mine.
"You're the strongest person I know," he said.
"Shut up."
"You stocked a freezer for six years."
"That's... not... the same!"
"You walked into my office in a fleece with a scanner on your wrist and told me what you needed."
"I'm scared of everything," he said, steady and low, in the voice he'd used to read me the eleven steps. "And I'm here."
