Chapter 19: No Clause

The penthouse door was unlocked, as he had said.

The apartment was dark except for the kitchen, where a lamp burned over the granite counter.

Rhys stood on the other side of it with his jacket off and his sleeves rolled.

On the counter were a bottle of mustard, a lemon, and for the first time a bowl of green apples.

"You said not to cook," he said.

"I did."

"I bought apples."

"I see them."

I walked in and set the plastic sleeve on the granite between us.

The page inside was creased where it had lived in his folder.

Both our signatures sat at the bottom, his square and fast, mine cramped and furious.

NO SEX IS PART OF THIS AGREEMENT, said the fourth line.

I took the page out of the sleeve.

"I tore up one clause on the first night," I said. "I never finished the job."

I tore it down the middle.

I laid the halves together and tore them again, and again, until it was a pile of white confetti on the stone.

He watched every piece fall.

"There," I said. "No lab. No quarter. No ten weeks. No clause about the truth or 'not yet,' because you don't get that one anymore."

"No," he said.

"I'm going to ask you for something, and you're going to answer it plainly."

"Ask."

"Why did you come to Somerville?"

"Because I could not stand in that penthouse without you in it," he said.

"Not for the money. Not for the vote."

"No. I brought the money because it was the one thing I knew how to do."
