Chapter 6: Chicken Soup

Ansel didn't say one word to me on the ride back to Hale Street.

His driver opened my door and looked at the sidewalk.

I walked into my shop with my hair a mess and my mouth swollen, and Fran took one look at me and went to put the kettle on.

I didn't sleep that night.

I kept hearing him say please.

In the morning Constance came in at ten past nine, with a covered pot in both hands.

"Chicken soup," she said, setting it on the counter. "You haven't been eating. I could see it on the news."

Fran stopped with a bucket of tulips halfway to the window.

"That's very kind," I said. "Thank you."

"Not at all, dear. It's Rosalind's recipe."

She took off her gloves and looked around the shop. The reporters were gone, and two customers were browsing the cooler.

"This was always such a lovely little place," she said.

I waited.

"I owe you an apology, Anneliese. The notice was handled badly. The foundation's lawyers get ahead of themselves." She touched my arm. "We'll talk about the lease next month, when everyone's calmer."

"The hearing is in thirty days."

"A hearing can be rescheduled."

I looked at her pearl earrings and her gentle face.

"You asked me about her things," I said. "In his bedroom."
