Chapter 4: The Survival Curve

Deb Rusnak did not say hello on Wednesday morning.

She wheeled her chair across the gap between our desks and put both hands on my armrests.

"You were in a car with a driver," she said.

"I was."

"A driver in a gray suit held the door for you at nine."

"It's a long story."

"It's a short story. You slept with him."

"Deb."

"Daria. You have a hickey on your neck the shape of a thumb."

I clapped a hand over it.

Everyone on the floor was eating their breakfast and not listening.

"It's complicated," I said.

"It's three percent. I ran it too, by the way."

"You what?"

"Monday afternoon. After you got called up. I pulled the pair myself." She lowered her voice. "I also pulled the curve."

"What did it say?"

"What you already know. Day 12."

"It's data."

"It's your data," Deb said. "You built the curve. So I'm going to say one thing, as the person who sits next to you. Don't treat this like an experiment."

"I'm not."

"You are a person whose last ex used your Netflix password for a year."

"I know who I am."

"Then be careful," she said, and kissed me on the head, and rolled back to her screen.

At eleven the whole floor went quiet.

The elevator opened on twenty-two, and a woman walked out in a green wrap dress with a white box in both hands.

She had a sleek dark bob, a wide mouth.

A faint dusting of flour on one forearm that she had clearly forgotten.

I knew her face from the slide.

Simone Quist.

Behind her came two people from marketing, a photographer, and a girl pushing a rolling rack of clothes.
