Chapter 23: Delivery
The door shuddered against Torben's shoulder.
"Open it," Lance said, cheerful and cracked. "I only want to see her. I'm her father, I have a right."
"No," Torben said.
"Halley? My mother signed everything away. She says I have to give up my own child."
The door shuddered again.
"I won't, do you hear me? I won't."
A contraction took me, hard and low, and I rode it with my fists in the sheet.
When it let go, I said, "Torben."
"I'm here."
"Step out into the hall."
He looked at me.
"Take him out where everyone can see," I said. "Not in here."
He didn't argue.
He put his hand on the handle and went out sideways.
He pulled the door nearly shut behind him, with Lance's weight against it.
Through the glass panel I saw it all.
The corridor was bright and long, with a nurse's station at the far end.
Three families in their coats stood along the wall.
A woman in a gown was shuffling slowly on her husband's arm.
An orderly stood frozen beside a cart.
