Chapter 22: The Chief's Seal
The Alliance Chief had come to the Gray Heron Hall with three hundred men.
He had left most of them in the street.
He stood in the front courtyard under a red banner, a heavy white-bearded man in a plain grey coat.
He leaned on a spear.
Behind him stood the hawk-faced woman from the third bench of the Court, with her mask in her hand.
She had a different face now, the face of a magistrate, and Ra-on liked her much better.
He came across the courtyard with Dong-ju on one side and Ryeo-won on the other.
He had put on his last clean tunic and tied up the sleeves with the red string.
He felt like a rabbit crossing a field with a hawk overhead.
"Mok Ryeo-won," said the Chief.
His voice was a rumble.
"The Crane of Haeram."
"I had heard you were dead."
"Not yet, Chief," Ryeo-won said, and bowed.
"Stand straight."
"I can't see whether you did."
The old man gave a barking laugh and then stopped, and looked at him for a long time.
"Two years," he said.
"I sent a servant with a basket of grain every season, and never visited."
"I told myself you wanted to be left alone."
"I did," Ryeo-won said.
"I didn't want to be left."
