Chapter 4: Terms
The Crowe lodge stood on a hill above the river, built of black logs, with a fire going in every room.
Jasper's smile had followed us up the hill.
Moonrise on the full moon, at the Redfern lodge, with Odette in my white dress and my name.
It was three nights away.
Mathias carried me in through the front door.
I had told him twice that I could walk, and both times my legs had folded.
He put me down in a chair by the biggest hearth in the great hall and set a wool blanket over my knees.
Wolves in human shape stood along the walls and watched me with open curiosity.
"Out," Mathias said.
They went.
Nobody argued, and the door shut behind the last of them.
It was only the two of us and the fire, and the bite on my shoulder, which had begun to throb.
"Show me," he said.
I pulled the collar of Odette's coat down.
The marks of his teeth were deep and neat, and the skin around them was swollen and hot.
He knelt in front of the chair with a bowl of water and a clean cloth.
"This will sting," he said.
"You said that last time."
"It was true last time."
The water was warm.
He wiped the blood away with slow strokes, and his hand was so large that his fingers covered the whole of my shoulder.
The cloth went away.
His thumb stayed.
It rested at the edge of the bite, on the bare skin below my collarbone, and neither of us moved.
I had been touched before. Darren had held me at parties, and kissed me in the car, and put a hand at the small of my back in every room we ever walked into.
I had never once felt it in my legs.
