Chapter 23: The Night Door Again

I worked my last winter shift at the Hillside House on the night of the eighth of May, which was not winter.

It had snowed once in the afternoon, a thin wet spring snow that melted on the road, and I counted it.

A woman in room three died at four in the morning.

She was a retired schoolteacher whose husband had died the year before, and her son in Arizona had not made the flight.

I sat with her through it.

I held her hand and told her about the lake, which was open now and green in the mornings.

She asked me to open the window, and I opened it.

The air came in cold and smelling of the harbor, and she breathed it twice and went.

I stayed with her for a time, as I always do.

When I came out, the night nurse was standing at the desk in her cardigan with my badge on it.

She looked at my face and said nothing.

She came and took the basin from my hands.

"Go home," she said.

"It's not six."

"Go home, Elin."

"Are you sure?" I asked.
