Chapter 8: The Lake Road
I left the house alone at six in the morning, without telling anyone.
I put on my own boots and his black coat, and I walked down the plowed drive in the blue dark with my hands in the sleeves.
Nobody stopped me.
Joel's truck was in the garage, with a light on in the cab, and I saw him sitting in the driver's seat with the dome light on and his hands on the wheel.
He didn't get out.
He watched me pass.
I turned onto the shore road and kept walking.
The lake lay on my right, white under the first gray light, and the wind came off it like a hand on my face.
It was the first time I had been alone in four days.
I needed it.
I didn't need to think about the bed or what I'd said in it, or the way his voice had cracked at the window.
I needed to put one foot in front of the other until I could feel my own weight on the ground.
A hundred yards on, I heard boots behind me.
They were slow and even, and they did not hurry.
I didn't turn.
"I said I'd drive you," Stellan said.
"I didn't ask you to."
"I know."
He fell into step beside me.
He wore his overcoat over his sweater, and no gloves, and his breath smoked.
