Chapter 4: Bank Error

Dexter put the flowers on my knees and hugged me hard enough to pull the IV tight.

"I'm so sorry," he said into my shoulder. "I'm so sorry, Quinn. I had no idea it was this bad."

He smelled like cedar cologne and the leather of his duffle.

I did not hug him back.

Over his shoulder I could see Norman, standing still beside the thermos. His eyes were on Dexter's hands.

Dexter let go and wiped his face with his sleeve.

"Mom said there was a banking mix-up," he said. "I've been sick about it all night."

"Walk me through the mix-up," Dad said.

His voice was very even, which was worse than shouting.

Dexter looked at him, then at Mom, then at me.

"I wasn't going to say this in front of everyone," he said. "Quinn, I'm sorry, but I think they should know."

"Say what?" I asked.

"In August you asked me to hold your share." His voice shook. "You said you were bad with money, and you were scared you would blow it. You asked me to keep it in my savings until you needed it."

I stared at him.

"I never said that."

"You did. You told me not to tell Mom and Dad, because they would think you were a baby." He swallowed. "I should have said no. I should have told them. But you were so serious about it."

Mom's hand went to her mouth.

"That doesn't make sense," I said. "I called you in September for seventy-five dollars. You said I was spending it."
