Chapter 13: Not Mine To Order
I found him in the kitchen before dawn, sitting at Nan's long table with his hands flat on the wood.
He had put on his shirt and not buttoned it.
The grey writing showed through the open collar, and the banked fire made it look like a map of a country that had burned.
I stopped in the doorway with the whole stack of my pages in my arms.
Every sheet I had ever copied from the chapel wall and from his back was in that stack.
"I'm not going to say anything," I said. "I'm only going to put these down."
I crossed the room and set the pages in front of him.
He looked at them, then at me.
"That's all of it," I said. "Every line I've read, every translation, in my own hand."
"The last row is on top. If you want to burn them, the fire is right there."
"I don't want to burn them."
"Then keep them, so nobody can say you were kept ignorant of your own skin."
His jaw moved.
"Tell me what you felt," he said. "When it worked."
