Chapter 15: The Old Room
My old room was at the top of the north stair, above the archive, and they locked me in it.
Nothing had been moved.
My narrow bed was there, and my inkstained desk, and the shelf of copybooks I had filled over ten years.
I did not sit down.
I stood at the window and watched the Tower across the courtyard, where a single torch burned in a slit.
He was in there, and I had said I would never give him an order.
At dusk the key turned in the lock.
My father came in alone, leaning on a servant's arm.
He sent the servant out with a flick of two fingers and shut the door himself.
He looked ten years older than he had that morning.
"Sit, Sigrid."
"I'll stand."
"As you like." He lowered himself into my desk chair with a grunt. "You have your mother's temper."
"You have no right to say her name."
