Chapter 10: Both Wives

On Monday morning I went to the county office myself.

I did not take Duncan's word for it, and I did not take his photograph.

Bea drove, and she parked in the loading zone, and when a guard glared she showed him her old hospital badge and he went away.

The clerk at the counter was a woman in her fifties with a pen behind each ear.

"Marriage records?" she said. "Which one?"

"My own," I said. "Hannah Draycott and Miles Teasdale."

She typed.

"Nine days ago. Valid, signed, filed. You're married, honey."

"Is there any other marriage on file for him?"

She typed again.

"Nothing. Just you."

"What about Miles Teasdale and Camilla Lowell? They had a ceremony on Saturday."

"A ceremony isn't a record," the clerk said. "You need a license, and nobody applied for that one. I'd know. We had your license on the wall for a week because the groom's secretary kept calling to ask if it had been processed."

I held the counter edge.

"The groom's secretary called?"

"Every day for three days. Wanted to know if it was final."

Miles had been checking that I was really his wife while he planned to stand beside another woman.

I thanked her and walked out into the hallway, where Bea was waiting with two paper cups of terrible coffee.
