Chapter 24: Two Crowns
On the second Saturday of August I stood in the vestry of St. Sarkis in a gown I had made myself.
It was ivory cotton lace over silk, cut to the measure of one body.
It had forty small buttons down the back and a hem that I had turned twice by hand.
Nobody had taken it in, and nobody had to.
Seta did up the buttons, because her fingers were younger than mine.
She was four months married, and she wore a sleeveless green dress and a gold cross.
She checked the window over the radiator before she did anything else.
It was shut and painted over.
"I'm only looking," she said.
"You're guarding it."
"If anyone tries to leave by it today, I'm going to stand in front of them and wave."
Shushan came in with her arms full of lavash and a jar of honey.
She put them down on the vestry table and looked at me for a long time.
"Your mother would have wept," she said in Armenian.
"My mother would have found a flaw in the hem."
"She'd have found one," Shushan said. "And then she would have wept."
My father waited at the door in a suit that fit him.
He had a pistachio in his breast pocket where a flower should have been.
He offered me his arm.
"You look beautiful," he said. "You also have the face you make at a bad hem. Somebody's flowers are crooked."
"Papa."
"Walk, Talin."
I walked.
The church was full, and the pews held no sides.
Kasparians and Boghosians sat together, row by row.
The old growers sat at the front and the packers at the back, and the foreman wore a new tie.
On the Boghosian end of the last pew sat a heavy man in a camel coat, alone, with his hat on his knee.
