Chapter 18: The Screen
The first photograph went up on the hymn screen during the offering, and nobody in Marrow Creek Baptist breathed.
It was Tate at the creek in July, waist-deep, laughing, with his shirt off.
It was four feet high.
Judah sat in the front pew with his hands on his knees and watched the congregation understand it.
The second photograph was Tate in his truck at a red light.
The third was Tate asleep at his window.
A murmur rose from the pews.
"Lord have mercy," an old woman said, loud and clear.
At the back of the sanctuary, a deacon in a good suit stood at the sound booth.
One hand rested on the laptop, and his face was carefully sorrowful.
Beside Judah, Hannah went rigid.
On the far side of the aisle, in the Hatchett pew, Sheriff Amory Hatchett bowed his head and covered his eyes.
Tate sat next to him in a clean white shirt with the bruise on his face gone yellow-green.
