Chapter 22: Casserole

Hannah Ostler came up the logging track on Saturday morning with a casserole in both hands.

Her mother's old station wagon ticked behind her.

"It's chicken and rice," she announced from the porch. "I made it. It's terrible. Eat all of it."

Tate opened the cabin door with a spatula in his fist.

"Is that for me?"

"It's for both of you." She looked past him at the black skillet in the sink.

"Did you try to make breakfast again?"

"No," Tate said.

"I can smell it from the porch."

"Judah, tell her."

"I'm not lying to a woman who brought casserole," Judah said.

Judah, at the table, put his head in his hands and laughed.

Hannah came in and set the dish on the stove.

She stood a moment in the warm room with her braid over her shoulder and her chin up.

Then she crossed the floor and put both arms round Tate's neck.

He stood stiff for one full breath.

Then his arms came round her, slowly, and he put his battered face into her cardigan.
