The blind in the hollow had a second stool now, and a blanket, and a thermos of coffee that Tate had made himself.
It was drinkable, against all odds.
It was the last Friday in May, and the sumac stood in full green leaf.
Across the yard, the second-floor window of the Hatchett house was open, with the lamp off and nobody inside.
"The state took my father's plea in April," Tate said, pouring.
He said it as he said everything now, plainly, with his eyes on the cup.
"Eleven years. He didn't look at me once in the courtroom."
"Do you want him to?"
"No." Tate handed Judah the cup. "I wanted somebody to say it out loud in a room with a judge. Somebody did."
"The nurse."
"The nurse. The preacher. You."
"And you," Judah said.
Tate shrugged one shoulder, and the corner of his scarred mouth lifted.
