Chapter 18: The Engagement
The Winter gala filled the MacMahon ballroom with two hundred guests and a hundred candles.
I wore a dark green dress that Fenella had pinned up the back an hour before, and I walked in on Soren's arm.
Nobody gasped.
That was new.
A week ago they would have gasped, and now they looked at the place where my hand rested on his sleeve, and then looked away, calculating.
Linden stood on the little dais at the end of the room with a glass in his hand.
Imogen stood a step behind him in white silk, her fingers wound in a small beaded clutch.
She did not look at me.
"Friends," Linden said, and the room hushed. "Elders of the Council. Tonight we celebrate the oldest promise of our house."
I felt Soren go rigid.
"Twenty years ago, my brother and I made a compact," Linden said warmly. "That my daughter would stand at the head of the MacMahon den beside her cousin. Tonight, I am proud to announce their engagement."
