Chapter 13: Not a Medicine Bottle

The judge had signed the order at seven that morning, without a hearing and without my name on the notice.

Quincy's lawyer laid the pages out on the penthouse table.

"A temporary conservatorship. For sixty days, Kenneth controls your accounts, your property, and your votes."

"My votes."

"Your thirty percent. He votes it Monday."

I did the math before she could.

"Seventy-one."

"Seventy-one against twenty-one. He doesn't need the room."

Quincy stood at the window.

"The hearing to vacate is Monday at eight," he said. "Two hours before the board meets. If the judge doesn't move, we lose."

"What do we have?"

"The recording. The photograph. The invoice." The lawyer touched each. "It's good. It isn't proof of the one thing a judge cares about, which is whether you're competent."

"I'm competent."

"I know," she said. "Say it to him on Monday."

"And the recording?"

"An independent lab can authenticate it by Monday morning. I've already sent it."

"Then I want the report in my hand."

"You'll have it."

"What else does a judge want?"

"Doctors. Three of them, who've seen you, who'll swear to a clear mind." She paused. "Kenneth has the private doctor and two specialists. We have nobody."

"I'll find them."

"Suzette, it's Saturday."

"I know what day it is."

I picked up the black phone and called the first number I could remember, the obstetrician I had seen before I married Kenneth, the one he had replaced with his own.

She answered on the fourth ring.

She said, "Suzette? He told me you'd left the country."

I closed my eyes.

"I'm in the city," I said. "I need you to say I'm sane."
