Chapter 15: Eight Minutes

I forwarded the address to Quincy's lawyer, and she forwarded it to a detective who answered on the first ring.

Then I put on my coat and went to court.

The courtroom smelled like old wood and floor wax.

Kenneth sat at the petitioner's table in a navy suit, perfectly composed, with three lawyers and a doctor.

He did not look at me.

The judge was a woman in her sixties with reading glasses on a chain, and she did not smile at anyone.

"Mr. Stockwell's petition describes a woman who is paranoid, unstable, and a danger to her unborn child," she said. "Mrs. Stockwell. You have ten minutes."

Three women sat behind me in the gallery.

My old obstetrician, a psychiatrist I had never met, and a nurse practitioner who had held my hand during the first ultrasound.

They had come in on a Monday morning because I had asked.

I stood up.

"Your Honor, I'd like to play something."

Kenneth's lawyer was on his feet at once.

"Objection. This is an emergency hearing about capacity, not a trial."

"Capacity," the judge said dryly, "is exactly what I'm hearing. Sit down. Play it."

My phone sat on the table in front of her.

I pressed the screen.

Kenneth's voice rolled out across the courtroom, easy and amused.

*Sir, that night was your best work.*

Nobody in the room moved.

*Paying those animals to wreck Suzette was the only way Lillian got Preston without a scandal.*

*Preston and Lillian belonged together. Suzette was the obstacle with a signed contract. I removed it.*

The judge took off her glasses.

*Lillian's boy is dying. He needs cord blood from a perfect match.*

*Then she tries again. And again.*
