Chapter 24: My Saving Angel

The judge gave Kenneth Stockwell forty-one years.

I did not go to the sentencing.

Quincy went, and sat at the back, and told me afterward that Kenneth had looked at the empty seat where I should have been and smiled once, and then stopped.

The two other men got thirty and life.

The man in the brown jacket pled to everything and asked for no mercy, and got none.

Lillian took six years.

Preston drove the boy to the first visit, and the boy came home quiet.

"Mommy cried," he told Preston in the car.

"I know, buddy."

"Is she a bad person?"

Preston thought about it for the length of two red lights.

"She did a bad thing," he said. "And she's going to be sorry for it for a long time. Both can be true."

The boy nodded and counted the cars.

"Was Uncle Ken my daddy?" he asked, after the next red light.

Preston gripped the wheel.

"Yes," he said, because he had promised never to lie to him again. "He was. He did very bad things, buddy. Before you were born. None of them were because of you."

The boy looked at his sneakers.

"Do I have to be bad too?"

"Never."

"Okay." He nodded slowly. "Can I still call you Dad?"

Preston pulled the car to the curb, and for a while he could not speak.

The boy waited, patient, with his hand on the whale.

"You can call me whatever you want," Preston said finally.

The circle came for my attention that winter, in cards and flowers and handwritten notes.
