Chapter 10: Terms

"It's the manager," I whispered.

Aksel's hand was still on my hip.

I felt him go perfectly still behind me.

"Is somebody in there?" the voice called again.

"It's Thea," I called back.

"I'm just finishing the buyback slips."

"The lights are half off," the manager said.

"I'm saving electricity," I said.

A long pause.

"Lock up when you go," the manager said.

The key withdrew.

Her footsteps went away across the floor.

I put my forehead on the cold wood of the counter and began to shake with laughter I could not let out.

Behind me Aksel made a strangled sound that I realized was the same thing.

"Saving electricity," he said.

"It was all I had," I said.

He pulled out of me carefully and helped me find my sweater.

We dressed in the half dark with our backs to each other, and the biology text lay on the floor where it had fallen.

When I turned around he was holding it.

He set it on its shelf, spine out, between the chemistry and the botany.

It was exactly where I had put it on the first night.

"I didn't forget," he said.

I felt something warm and awful go through my chest.

I took him back to my room.

It was not an invitation.

It was a decision.

Halle was on shift, and the corridor was dark, and I turned the lock behind us and sat on the edge of my narrow bed with my clothes still on.
