Chapter 21: Founders' Hall
Founders' Hall holds two hundred, and every seat was taken by six.
It was the college refectory, a long stone room with a vaulted ceiling and black iron chandeliers.
Portraits of dead Kvales and dead presidents looked down from the walls.
Round tables stood on the flagstones under white cloths, with silver and candles and a card at every place.
I came in on Aksel's arm in my mother's green wool dress.
I had pinned my braid up with two of her hairpins.
The room turned to look, and I let it.
"Table fourteen," I said.
"It's by the kitchen door," Aksel said.
"I know," I said.
"I'm going to sit in it."
We crossed the flagstones past the trustees' table, where Gunnar sat at the head in a black suit that did not fit him anymore.
He rose when he saw me.
He did not speak.
He looked at my face this time.
He held it for as long as I let him, with his hand flat on the cloth, and then I walked on and he sat.
Halle was already at table fourteen in her good black dress, with a phone propped against the water glass and a nursing cardigan over her shoulders.
