Chapter 24: The First Hard Snow
The first hard snow of the winter came on the ninth of December, a week before term ended.
It began at noon.
By four it had buried the quad to the knees, and the chapel bell rang muffled across it.
The whole of Halden College went quiet under the white.
I was in Room 14 with the lamp lit and the quilts on the bed.
Halle had gone to her cousin's in Duluth for the weekend.
She had left a note on my desk that said, in capitals, *DO NOT COME OUT OF THIS ROOM FOR TWO DAYS. THAT IS A MEDICAL ORDER.*
I had read it twice and laughed.
At six there were three knocks.
I opened the door.
Aksel stood in the corridor with snow on his shoulders and his hat in his hands.
He had a small paper bag from the diner under his arm.
He had been to Mankato that morning, and I had gone with him.
I had sat in a kitchen with a pot of coffee going cold, and watched a woman in a green cardigan look at him across a table for an hour and a half.
She had not said she forgave him.
She had said at the door that he could come again.
"You're tired," I said.
"I have never been so tired," Aksel said.
"Come in," I said.
He came in, and I shut the door behind him and turned the lock.
He stood just inside, in the lamplight, looking at me.
I was in my mother's flannel nightshirt with my braid down.
The hard small curve of my stomach pushed out the cloth.
I saw his eyes go to it, and I saw them come back up.
"Ask me," I said.
He went still.
"Ask you what?" he said.
"You know what," I said.
"I told you to ask when I wasn't carrying your child, and I'm still carrying it.
