Chapter 12: The Night Mine Died

I didn't say anything for a moment.

Then I opened my laptop on the table between us and turned it to face her.

"Five years," I said. "That's how far back the logs go."

Bianca looked at the screen.

It was a column of dates and device names from my father's den.

"Every Wednesday night at the same hour, someone opens his phone and his safe app," I said. "Somebody with his fingerprint, because they hold the phone while he's asleep or at dinner."

"It started when you were thirteen."

"You were thirteen when you started reading my father's files."

"Yes," Bianca said.

She said it as plainly as she had ever said anything.

Nico had put his laptop down. He was staring at her.

"What were you looking for?" I asked.

"Everything." She sat down in the chair again and folded her hands in her lap. "The first thing I found was a folder with my father's initials."

"You never said anything."

"I had nine years to work out when to say it," Bianca said. "Don't hurry me now."

I kept my voice level.

"Did you take my grandmother's money?"

"Yes. I enrolled Nico's phone nine months ago, and the night you and he finally stopped being careful, it was convenient."

"Why?"

"Because you'd bought a plane ticket with it, and a room, and you were about to buy a life. I wanted you to have to call home."
