Chapter 7: Family Weekend

My parents came to Family Weekend.

They flew in on a Friday, and by noon on Saturday the campus center was full of parents holding coffee and taking photos of their children.

I stood by a pillar with Nico three steps behind me.

My father walked through the double doors in a black overcoat, and the crowd moved around him without knowing why.

My mother was at his side. Bianca walked half a step behind them, wearing a cream cardigan and carrying his phone.

My father never let anyone else touch that phone.

"Livia," my mother said, and opened her arms. "Baby."

I let her hug me.

She smelled like the soap she had used my whole life.

"We brought you something," she said.

She turned and lifted a shopping bag from a guard's hand.

Inside was a steel cash box.

It was my box.

"I took it out of the kitchen trash that same night," Mom said. "I washed off every slip and dried it. I couldn't let you throw away three years of work."

She was smiling at me, proud of herself.

Around us, other parents had stopped talking.

My father cleared his throat. "Come home, Livia. We will take the Caribbean trip in December. Bianca agreed to wait."

"I did," Bianca said, and put a hand over her heart. "I think it's only fair."
