Chapter 15: Face Down

My apartment door was still swinging shut behind us.

I pushed him against the wall and put a piece of ice to his split lip.

"Hold still."

He held still.

I pressed the cube against the cut, and it slid, and a bead of cold water ran down into his beard.

He watched me with his green eyes half closed.

"Open."

He opened his mouth.

I put the ice on his tongue.

He sucked it, slowly, and I watched his throat move, and heat rolled through me from the soles of my feet.

"Better?"

"Not yet."

I kissed the corner of his mouth, next to the cut.

I kissed the other corner.

I took his lower lip between mine, very carefully, and sucked the ice-cold sting out of it.

He made a sound.

"You're still angry," he said.

"Yes."

"Then use me."

"I'm going to use you the way I'd use any patient."

I led him down my narrow hall to the living room.

My one-bedroom in Lakeside was small and bright, with plants on every sill and a foldable massage table standing against the wall.

He looked at it.

"Shirt," I said.

He pulled it over his head and stood there bruised and bare to the waist, with Sal's red print blooming on his ribs.

"On the table. Face down."

He climbed up and stretched out on his stomach with his arms at his sides.

I took a bottle of arnica oil from the shelf and warmed it between my palms.

Then I laid my hands on his back.

He sighed, a long ragged breath that went through the table.

I worked the oil into his shoulders in long slow strokes, down the muscles along his spine, thumbs spread.

The left shoulder was knotted.

I dug my fingers into the tight cord at the base of his neck and rolled it, and he groaned into the vinyl.

"There?"

"There."

"Breathe."

He breathed.

I went lower.

I pressed my thumbs into his lower back, in the two hollows above the waistband, and felt him shiver.
